Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound MPP Bill Walker says it was disheartening to see the Liberal government vote down his proposal for capping election spending by third-parties.
Walker's bill, which was debated today at Queen's Park, proposed a spending cap of $150,000 for each third-party group's partisan ads in an election. He says the cap, which is also being advocated by the province's elections watchdog, Greg Essensa, would remove the ability of special-interest groups to influence elections. It would also put Ontario's election laws in line with the rest of Canada.

The United Way of Bruce Grey today announced that $107,652.00 has been distributed to date to victims of the devastating fire in Owen Sound on August 10.
The United Way also announced that two area insurance professionals have volunteered their time and expertise to participate in the process developed to assist fire victims. The volunteer experts are Rob Allan, a 30-year insurance veteran who recently retired from Nicol Insurance; and Brian Glass, a former Ontario Insurance Adjusters Association executive member who spent his career as a loss adjuster and claims manager.
Mr. Glass and Mr. Allan join United Way volunteer chair Dave Myette and Executive Director Francesca Dobbyn on a working committee to review claimant loss lists and approve the release of funds in a timely and responsible process.

Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound MPP Bill Walker put childhood cancer in the gold spotlight today at Queen's Park, garnering unanimous consent from all MPPs to wear the symbolic gold ribbon pins in support of children and families affected by this disease. Walker also delivered a statement in the Legislature earlier this afternoon to call on all members to work harder toward ending childhood cancer.
