“Donating to Labour’s historical partner, the United Way, has taken on even more meaning in the worldwide pandemic” says Grey Bruce Labour Council President, Kevin Smith.

“The Labour Council over the months of the pandemic has kept a constant eye on the needs of the most vulnerable in our community. In consultation the United Way of Bruce Grey we found a way to help those very people.

Those very people being trampled by COVID-19”. The United Way of Bruce Grey established a COVID-19 relief fund with the goal of ensuring, amongst many other initiatives, that when people were told to shelter in their homes that people with no place to call home would be sheltered and cared for.

Labour Day is only a few days away. This day is typically a day of parades and picnics and thankfully in Grey Bruce, with the health and safety of everyone in mind, it will still be a celebration. Labour Day is often framed in celebrating what workers do to contribute each day to their communities, their families and beyond. This year the labour council is not only celebrating workers with a car caravan across the region, it is showing in one small way what makes workers’ vast contributors just beyond that of our labour.

The Grey Bruce Labour Council, supported by our union delegates, is pleased to announce that as of this Labour Day the Grey Bruce Labour Council has donated $2800.00 to the COVID-19 relief fund of the United Way of Bruce Grey.
While the entire council supports the donations, Grey Bruce Labour Council Treasurer, Gord Cale, has championed the campaign of ongoing donations to the relief fund.

Dave Trumble and Chris Stephen, Labour Council VP’s, have undertaken the coordination of Labour Day activities this year and both VP’s invite the entire community to participate in the car caravan commencing at 11AM at Bill’s Valu-Mart in Meaford and progressing across the region.

Trumble notes “that while the pandemic has taken a heart rendering toll of the world, workers and their unions will lead us out into a better and more socially democratic world in a post pandemic world, but we must never lose sight of those in our community that we can help”.
