Grey County Councillor Selwyn Hicks is returning to the Warden’s chair in 2021. Warden Hicks, who served previously as Warden in 2019, was elected by County Council at the virtual inaugural meeting on December 1. Paul McQueen, Grey County’s 2020 Warden, also ran for the position.

In his inaugural address, Warden Hicks spoke of the importance of helping vulnerable people, especially during the challenges of the pandemic. “As a member of the Hanover-Owen Sound Task Force as well as the Affordable Housing Task Force, I have been moved deeply by the data that shows how challenging day-to-day life is for far too many in our community,” said Warden Hicks. “The last year has been especially difficult for our poor and marginalized citizens.”

He also spoke of the importance of council working together to accomplish strategic priorities. “It has become clear to me that “affordable housing” has emerged as the number one issue requiring Grey County’s attention. We have work to do!”

Warden Hicks is also the Deputy Mayor of the Town of Hanover. He practices law from offices in Hanover and Walkerton with his wife of 24 years, Barbara Hicks. They have four children, Selwyn IV, Rylee, Connor and Chloe. Warden Hicks was born in Guyana in South America and moved to Toronto when he was nine. Sewlyn and Barbara moved to Hanover in 2003 and he entered politics in 2006, serving as a Hanover councillor from 2006-2014 and as deputy mayor from 2015-present.

The election of the Warden happens each December at the inaugural session. Due to COVID-19, the meeting was held virtually.

Warden Hicks was nominated for the Warden’s position by Grey County councillors Brian Milne and Barb Clumpus.
