As anticipated, the holidays did produce province-wide spikes in cases of Covid-19 so on January 14th, to curb the spread, the Province of Ontario declared a second State of Emergency and a Stay-at-Home Order. The turbulent and unwelcome state that COVID has thrust upon us, continues, but now it includes a more virulent, more highly contagious variation. As a result, there is a very real danger of our hospitals becoming overwhelmed and health care workers over extended. There is good news ahead, but we mustn’t become complacent at this time. We know that by following the 3 Ws – Washing hands frequently, Watching our distance from other folks (ideally 6ft), and Wearing face coverings correctly, that we can protect ourselves, our families, and our community. The provincial order urges us to “stay safe, stay home, save lives,” and we can comply with that message by avoiding crowds and participating whenever possible, in outdoor activities in our neighbourhoods instead of indoor gatherings.
Let me share with you some of the good news…
Grey Bruce Health Unit has begun the distribution of vaccines to our first priority, our most vulnerable folks and their caregivers in long-term care facilities. It will take time to immunize the general public in our area, but as more vaccines are distributed, the risk of community spread of the virus diminishes.
During this second provincewide shutdown, the business of the Municipality continues. Council meetings and public information sessions are held virtually, while our staff continue to deliver essential services. Just last week, Council passed the 2021 budget with a total property tax levy increase of 3.43% which also includes close to 2.5% of the operational budget for infrastructure projects. This budget continues to provide the same annual services that are important to all residents within the Municipality of Meaford.
Public input into proposed projects and services is so welcome and important to our success. We encourage you to get involved, have your say, and influence project outcomes. Coming up on February 1st, there is a public meeting to discuss the proposed Interim Development Charges Study. We had a first virtual look at the long awaited Transportation Master Plan this past Wednesday, but there is still an opportunity to provide your input by visiting the Meaford.ca website and clicking on “Get Involved”.
Finally this week, and on a personal note, I have two announcements. First, we said goodbye to Bill and Barb McDonald as they retired from Bill’s ValuMart, with many, many thanks for their service and particularly, their tremendous support of our community. Second, there is an anonymous angel in our community who took the time over the holiday to write a very personal and touching note of thanks to several folks who work in public service. To me, this is representative of the spirited, kindhearted thoughtfulness of a very special community. Your very kind note is a treasured keepsake. Thank you.
Stay well everyone. Stay safe, stay home, and save lives.
Mayor Barb Clumpus
