March 23, 2022: Providing a healthier future for residents of Grey Bruce - that’s the goal of the Owen Sound Regional Hospital Foundation’s Caring for Tomorrow Endowment Fund.

Today, the Foundation presented a cheque for $600,000 from the Endowment to Gary Sims, President and CEO of Grey Bruce Health Services.

The money will help purchase medical equipment and make improvements across the Hospital, including new workstations on wheels for nurses, an OR table used for hip and knee surgery, plus systems to track and sterilize surgical instruments – just to name a few.

“The endowment fund is like a savings account for medical equipment at the Hospital,” explains Investment Committee Chair, Chris Frook. “Donations go into the Fund and they stay in. Part of the annual income earned is used to purchase equipment. So, when future needs arise, or new medical procedures are found, the funds are available to help.”

The Endowment is comprised of a large “Emerging Needs” fund, plus 28 named and special purpose funds. Fund contributions towards the total were as follows:

Emerging Needs: $397,000

Jessie Calder $52,000

Since it was established in 1996 the Endowment has grown substantially with gifts from individuals, families, and donations left through estates. The Dick & Gale O’Brien Endowment was established in early 2022, to support cancer and neurology care at the Hospital.

With its contribution for 2021, the Endowment has provided $6.8 million for equipment and clinical staff education.

“We have a constant need for new medical equipment at our Hospitals,” noted GBHS CEO, Gary Sims. “Millions of dollars are needed to meet highest priorities each year, so we are thankful to the Foundation and every donor who made this investment in the future of hospital care.”

A gift to the Endowment is something almost anyone can consider. Give now with cash or securities, or later, through your Will, RRIF plan or life insurance. Your legacy will improve patient care at the hospital year after year – ensuring future generations get the care they need, when they need it, close to home.
