The forested area at St. George’s Park on the north-east side of the 10th Street and 4th Avenue East intersection will be undergoing restoration work the week of March 28, 2022.
In July of 2021, the City began a forest restoration project in this 2.9 acre area of escarpment ravine between Victoria Park and St. George’s Park. The work was included in the Victoria Park Master Plan, which notes that the site would benefit from removing invasive species.
Phase 1 included the completion of a basic forest inventory, marking ash trees for removal, treatment of invasive ivy with a selective herbicide, and removal of invasive tree species. This work was completed in the fall of 2021 by Lands and Forests Consulting.
Phase 2 of the project involves the removal of 134 dead and diseased ash trees. Lands and Forest Consulting began this work on Monday, March 28, with an anticipated completion date of Friday, April 1, 2022. The project takes a proactive approach in dealing with the effects of Emerald Ash Borer (EAB), which include advanced tree mortality caused by EAB infection.
Phase 3 will include secondary treatment of invasive plant species and planting of native trees, shrubs, and plants throughout the selected forest area, anticipated to take place later this year. New plantings will include:
Planting |
Species |
Trees |
White Pine, Hemlock, Sugar Maple, Basswood, and Yellow Birch |
Shrubs |
Leatherwood, Elderberry and Dogwood |
Understory Plants |
Various native ferns, Trilliums, Blue Cohosh, Trout Lily |
This multi-step action plan will improve the long-term health and quality of the forested area. Thinning of the trial area focuses on reducing the proportion of ash species in the area, and will ensure that the forest is healthy and maintained for future generations to enjoy.
