One hundred percent of all impaired driving crashes are preventable. As we approach the long weekend in May, Ontario Students Against Impaired Driving, OSAID, is launching the first ever SAID Day on May 19th and would like to remind everyone to have a safe weekend.

OSAID is asking school across the province to send a simple and safe message to their staff and students to have a safe weekend by insuring they never drive impaired or ride with an impaired driver.

The prelaunch of SAID Day is planned at Owen Sound District Secondary School with a dramatic demonstration the Jaws-of-Life vehicle extraction demonstrated by the Owen Sound Fire and Emergency Services on May 18 at 11:45AM following a Teacher Basketball game, and demonstrations with OSAID Fatal Vision Goggles.

The events are being organized by grade 12 student Foster Tannahill as part of an Owen Sound District Secondary School leadership class project.

Matt Evans, Provincial Coordinator for OSAID says, “We try to keep our messaging positive but we also need to be vigilant as a new generation of students are confronted with the same issues that their parents did,  -The choice to drive impaired or ride with an impaired driver. The smart choices needs to be promoted by youth for youth.”

The Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addictions states: “The driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is a major contributor to fatal road crashes in Canada. Youth are the largest group of drivers who die in crashes and test positive for alcohol or drugs.”
