Wednesday afternoon Georgian Bluff’s Council, staff, and local dignitaries held a special ceremony in celebration of long-time Council member Carol Barfoot. MP Alex Ruff recently presented her with a Platinum Jubilee coin – an honour extended to outstanding individuals who make significant contributions to their community.
Councillor Barfoot was first elected to Council in 1991. A Georgian Bluffs resident of more than four decades, she has served over 28 years as an elected official in the community. Over the years she has sat on all township committees, and been an active member of the Kemble and District Lions Club, Sydenham Sportsmen Association, and an enthusiastic community volunteer.
Former MP Larry Miller and fellow members of council shared memories and thanks, and read letters from others until the tiny woman was surrounded with flowers and tributes. She opened a time capsule of newspapers and local history books dating back to 1983 - more than a decade before the amalgamation of Keppel, Sarawak and Derby into the current municipality - and added some memories of her own of the communities she served.
“I do not regret one minute that I spent as a councillor in this Township” said Councillor Barfoot. “I love the people here. I did it because I wanted to help, and I’d do it again in a minute.”
She openly shared that she was 82 and had been diagnosed and treated for cancer over the past four years, but said she remained positive about every day. While her name may not be on the ballot this year, Barfoot clearrly has no intention of retiring her passion for her community. "I may be old, but I still have my voice".
