Owen Sound Fire and Emergency Services quickly responded to a working fire on the balcony of an apartment building Friday, June 28, at 2:09 p.m.

Responding 1st and 2nd alarm crews contained the fire to the area of origin on the 6th floor.

The highrise building, located at 305 14th Street West, contains 187 dwelling units and is operated by Grey County Housing.

All units were evacuated at the time of the fire for approximately two hours, and 14th Street West was closed to traffic in both directions

“If you must smoke, ALWAYS ensure smoking materials are properly extinguished and ashes are stored in a non-combustible container,” said Phil Eagleson, Owen Sound Fire Chief.

If a fire occurs in your apartment, immediately leave your apartment, and call 911 from a safe location.

When leaving your apartment, please ensure your apartment door is closed to assist in containing the fire and protect other occupants of the building.
