Ontario Greens leader and MPP for Guelph, Mike Schreiner, released the following statement in response to the news that the RCMP will investigate the Ford government’s Greenbelt scandal upon referral from the OPP:

I am pleased to hear that the RCMP will begin an investigation into the corrupt process that saw a few wealthy, well-connected land speculators cash in $8.3 billion on the backs of everyday Ontarians.

Ontario Greens have repeatedly called for the resignation of Housing Minister Steve Clark and his chief of staff, as well as for a police investigation into the revelations contained in the Auditor General’s Greenbelt report.

With the resignation of Ryan Amato and the announcement of the RCMP investigation, the accountability process has finally begun.

But the Premier has a long road ahead of him – and Ontarians are too smart to simply forgive and forget.

Ontario Greens continue to call for the following measures to repair the harm done by Ford’s Greenbelt giveaway and restore public trust:

• • The passing of legislation permanently restoring the Greenbelt in its entirety and bringing back conservation easements on DRAP lands;
  • The resignation of housing minister Steve Clark;
  • The implementation of real solutions to the housing crisis that put people first – starting with my bills to build more homes people can afford in communities they want to live in.
