walk for alzheimersThe first springtime Walk for Alzheimer's in Grey-Bruce was a gratifying success, raising nearly $70,000.

The Alzheimer Society of Grey-Bruce switched from the winter-time Walk for Memories, which was an indoor event, to the Walk for Alzheimer's. Two Walks were held on Saturday May 7, at Kelso Beach in Owen Sound and Sulphur Spring near Hanover.

"We could not be more pleased," said Executive Director Deborah Barker. "Turnout at both Walks was larger than anything we had ever seen at the Walk for Memories."

More than 250 people took part in both Walks and there were many more young children and families.

"We focused on encouraging people to form teams and walk together," Barker said. "We had 34 teams in total including one family team with 17 members, and one business team that raised almost $4,500."

Activities for children and families were also provided at both Walks, and they proved very popular, Barker said.

All of the money raised will stay in Grey-Bruce to help support local programs and services for persons with dementia and for their families and their partners in care.

"We provide information, education, support and counselling services to more than 3,000 people each year," Barker said. "That works out to an average of almost 10 contacts with clients per working day.

"Our support staff are very busy and the support we provide helps many people maintain their independence and the highest quality of life possible as the disease progresses.

"Those who supported the Walk for Alzheimer's are helping to make a real difference in the lives of people we all know and care about, right here in our own community."
