Just before 10:00 pm on Saturday October 22, a 9-1-1 call was received for a man that was without vital signs in a hotel room at 10th Street East and 9th Avenue East. Owen Sound Police and EMS responded to the location and while attending to the man, police observed what appeared to be an explosive device and an assortment of ammunition in the room. A female who was in the hotel room was arrested by the police. The man was transported to the hospital by EMS and is expected to recover.
The Owen Sound Police Service contacted the Ontario Provincial Police Explosive Device Unit (EDU) to assist with safely removing the device from the room. Upon further inspection a second similar device was located and removed. The devices were taken out of the city and rendered inoperative by the OPP-EDU.
On Sunday October 24, at approximately 11:00 pm, Owen Sound Police executed a search warrant in the 300 block of 11th Street East. When officers entered the man's home, they observed what appeared to be another explosive device in the residence. Police sealed the apartment and notified the Ontario Provincial Police Explosive Device Unit to assist.
On Monday October 25, the Ontario Provincial Police Explosive Device Unit and the Owen Sound Police re-entered the residence and located the ingredients for explosive device making and its delivery system. Police also located pills, marihuana and stolen property in the home.
The 31 year old male and 25 year old female face charges of:
1) Possession of explosive substance for an unlawful purpose
2) Possession of explosive substance for an unlawful purpose
3) Possession of explosive substance for an unlawful purpose
4) Possession of explosive substance for an unlawful purpose
5) Possession of explosive substance for an unlawful purpose
6) Possession of methamphetamine
7) Possession for the purpose of trafficking fentanyl
8) Possession of marihuana
9) Possession of proceeds of crime (currency)
10) Possession of property obtained by crime
11) Possession of a prohibited weapon ( flick-knife )
The male faces one additional charge of breaching a condition of a probation order.
This is an ongoing investigation and no further information about the case or the accused persons will be released by the Owen Sound Police Service at the present time.
