Community Foundation Grey Bruce hosted a celebration of community philanthropy last evening at the Best Western Inn on the Bay in Owen Sound. The Foundation distributed over $168,000 in community grants and capital funding to thirty-five charities and not-for- profits from across the region.
Representatives from a variety of organizations were present to
pick up their cheques and to share their stories. All recipients expressed gratitude to the organizations, individuals and families that have generously invested in the future of Grey and Bruce by endowing funds and legacy gifts with the Foundation.
The vast array of meaningful community projects receiving support encompassed new kids' saddles for PRANCE (Pegasus Riding Association Nurturing Challenged Equestrians), special events for students at the Bluewater Regional Science and Tech Fair and development support for the Huron Shores Hospice. Much needed capital support will assist with a wide variety of projects including facility upgrades at the Meeting Place in Tobermory, a new roof at the Roxy Theatre in Owen Sound, and a new kids' splash pad in Port Elgin, among others.
Guests at the granting ceremonies were treated to performances by Orchestra North and Owen Sound Poets
Laureate Larry Jensen and Rob Rolfe with their special guest Richard Yves Sitoski . A highlight of the evening was a tribute to the late philanthropist Eva Leflar whose Donor Advised Fund supports many projects benefitting disadvantaged children and families in the region.
In her remarks to the crowded ballroom, Joan Eaglesham said "Every year, community foundations across the
country make a commitment to improving the quality of life in their communities by supporting programs and
projects of local non-profit organizations that serve in the fields of education, recreation, environment, culture and social services. Community Foundation Grey Bruce is no different." Chair of the Foundation Board, Kim West, added "Since its inception in 1994, Community Foundation Grey Bruce has distributed a total of
$2,557,289 in grants to local charities. Grants, scholarships and bursaries totaling $640,000 will be disbursed by the end of 2016. Our work is making for positive change in Grey Bruce. We're here for good!""
