The Board of Health for the Grey Bruce Health Unit supports the Government of Canada implement plain and standardized tobacco product packaging.

The Board endorsed proposed legislation that would prohibit colour, logos, branding, slogans, images and stylized fonts on all tobacco packages sold in Canada. All packages would be  a standard size and shape and would not include any distinctive finishes or specialty formats. Standard packaging goes beyond plain packaging to address marketing by means of additional packaging associated with tobacco products.

· Plain packs are less appealing to youth.

· Smokers rated cigarettes from plain packages as less enjoyable.

· Smokers show a higher motivation for quitting tobacco when using plain packs.

· Smokers pay more attention to warning labels on plain packaging.

· Smokers are more likely to smoke less, consider quitting, or quit smoking after using a plain package.
