grey roots signGrey Roots Museum & Archives is pleased to announce the receipt of a $50,000 Museums Assistance Program (MAP) grant from the Department of Canadian Heritage for improvements to artefact and archives storage.

This grant will fund the installation of four new high density rolling storage units, and a wall-mounted storage system to accommodate a dugout, a rowboat, and a canoe. These units will be 'open storage', so that visitors to Grey Roots can see the large artefacts (mainly furniture, trunks and watercraft) that have cultural and historical relevance to Grey County. In addition, archives storage will be expanded, in order to better document and make accessible the County's archival history.

Sim Salata, Collections Manager, says, "This will allow Grey Roots to store and show its significant collection of furniture, much of it locally made, together, for the first time in the museum's history. Public access to collection will be greatly improved."

MAP grants are provided through the Department of Canadian Heritage, which promotes and supports the arts and heritage sectors throughout Canada, and require a
matching contribution from the recipient.

"We know that investing in our arts and culture helps build strong communities," said the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Canadian Heritage. "That is why our government is proud to support the improvements to the storage facilities of Grey Roots Museum & Archives. This project will ensure that the museum can continue to preserve and promote our heritage for years to come."

Work on the project has already begun. It is expected to be completed by the end of 2017.
