kincardine studentsA large contingent of students, including those from Elgin Market and Huron Heights Public Schools, packed the Davidson Centre in Kincardine with local dignitaries, media, school board and municipal staff, and other community members on Tuesday, January 16, 2018 to welcome a special guest. The Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell, Ontario's Lieutenant Governor, marked her 55th official civic visit by sharing an inspiring hope filled message that focused on the protection and preservation of Earth's ecosystems and forests as outlined in United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 15: Life on Land. kincardine students 2Following remarks, students had an opportunity to present Her Honour with a few mementos, including a bouquet made from items found along the Canada 150 Trail, a local food basket, and student art works depicting "What Canada Means to Me" and a winter scene using techniques practiced this year in art class.

Later in the morning, students were bussed to the nearby Stoney Island Conservation Area to observe the Lieutenant Governor officially open a section of the Canada 150 Trail with a plaque unveiling and ribbon cutting. To symbolize the occasion, students were joined by other outdoor enthusiasts for a cross country ski and snowshoe hike in the pristine natural surroundings.

Meanwhile, a small group of student representatives had the privilege of meeting dignitaries and other special guests by attending a mayor's luncheon held for the Lieutenant Governor at the municipal offices in Kincardine.
