OSDSS Grade 10 student Eastyn Klages was selected a winner of a Government of Canada History award last week.

She was selected for her essay, "Justice; A New National Historic Site", a paper arguing the merits of declaring "Gordon Indian Residential School" a national historic site.

"I chose this question because if my answer were to become a reality, I feel like it would mean something to more people than just me," says Klages.

Klages is one of 192 high school and university students in Canada to receive the $1000 award for her work.

The awards honour the exceptional work of university students studying history (for the significance of their research in Canadian history) or education (for the originality of an activity for teaching Canadian history). The awards also recognize the work of high school students (in grades 10, 11 and 12/Secondary 4,5 and Cégep) who, through their writing, have shown an interest in great moments in Canadian history.

In all, more than 800 student submissions were received from across the country.
