floodingFluctuations in temperature and recent rainfall have resulted in the deterioration of surface ice of the Saugeen River through the Town of Durham. Ice jamming and localized flooding are possible in the reaches below the lower dam near the baseball diamonds.

Water levels across the watershed are moderating, however, Environment Canada is forecasting warmer temperatures, snow melt and rainfall for Thursday. It is anticipated that this will result in rising water levels again. Flows are expected to remain elevated into the weekend, however, major flooding is not anticipated.

This message does not require Municipal Flood Coordinators to take specific emergency action but having been alerted to the potential for flooding they should take precautionary measures, including the possible use of heavy equipment to maintain or establish free flow river channel conditions.

Residents are reminded to use caution near watercourses. Water temperatures remain frigid and streambanks can be extremely unstable and slippery. Parents are encouraged to keep their children and pets away from streams and off frozen water bodies.

This message will remain in effect until 11:00 am on Monday, February 11th, 2019, unless local conditions warrant further updates. The Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority (SVCA) and municipal staff will continue to monitor watershed conditions.
