This Friday, March 15 at 2pm, Owen Sound Grey Bruce youth and their supporters are joining in a global movement to demand climate action based on science. Local students encourage others to gather at Owen Sound City Hall to urge leaders to set a course for stopping climate warming.
#FridaysforFuture is a non-partisan, people's movement following the call from Swedish student @GretaThunberg to school strike for action on climate change.
At the age of 11, Greta became depressed about climate change. She wondered, if climate destruction was certain according to all the world’s scientists, and none of those in power were talking about it or taking action, what was the point of going to school?
Greta sat alone on the steps of the Swedish legislature for three weeks in August 2018 to protest against the lack of action on the climate crisis. She posted what she was doing on Instagram and Twitter and sparked a global movement.
This year, Greta addressed world leaders at Davos, and has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
As of this writing, youth in 1769 cities in 112 countries will be striking on March 15. including 51 cities across Canada, 16 of which are in Ontario. Owen Sound is one of those cities.
“I am going on strike because it’s my future, and older people are destroying it with carbon emissions”, says one Notre Dame student, age 12.
Greta requests that people strike in front of their closest town hall every Friday with a sign, take a picture and post it with the hashtags #Fridaysforfuture #Climatestrike.
Greta warns us that there is no hope without action, and that is what she and children and youth globally are peacefully demanding.
A new UN report released details of the consequences of human-made climate change: millions of people are dying every year as a result of poor air quality, water pollution and associated diseases kill 14 million annually, and 29% of the Earth’s surface can no longer support agriculture. The report concludes that “unsustainable human activities globally have degraded the Earth’s ecosystems, endangering the ecological foundations of society.”
