Students showed what a safe community means to them in submissions to an art contest sponsored by the Bruce Peninsula Safe Communities Committee. Twenty-four students from Bruce Peninsula and Peninsula Shores District Schools entered artwork depicting road, water and fire safety, being prepared, wearing protective gear, hiking safety as well as illustrating safe communities as those where people are safe to walk and cycle.

Mariah Schnadmiller of Peninsula Shores District School and Sasha Cognigni and Megan Belanger of Bruce Peninsula District School, who entered together, took top prize of $50. All participants received a pizza party. Peninsula Shores District School also received a donation from the Bruce Peninsula Safe Communities Committee towards their art program for submitting the top entry.

“The quality of the work was quite impressive,” said Karen Kerker, Public Health Nurse and member of the sponsoring committee. “It is clear that young people have a pretty clear idea about what a safe community is and what you need to do to keep safe.”

The art work travelled on the Chi Cheemaun ferry’s maiden spring voyage from Owen Sound to Tobermory on May 2. Passengers had the opportunity to vote for their favourite art pieces and talk with Bruce Peninsula Safe Communities’ members about their work.

The Bruce Peninsula Safe Communities committee works collaboratively with community and across sectors to help the Bruce Peninsula to be a safe community for people to work, live and play.
