Southgate - On Wednesday, December 3, 2014 at approximately 6:26 a.m., Grey County OPP received a report of a break-in at the landfill site located on Southgate Side Road 41 in the Township of Southgate.
Sometime between 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 2nd and 6:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 3rd, unknown persons forcibly entered the site. Various storage units were breached and searched. Approximately 300-400 lbs of scrap copper wire was stolen from the site. This is the second break-in at the site since August 2014.
Police continue to investigate.
Copper thefts are committed by opportunistic criminals looking for instant money. The stolen copper is taken to recyclers or scrap metal dealers in exchange for cash. Theft of copper wire results in damage that often far outweighs the value of the actual product stolen.
Residents are urged to report any suspicious persons, vehicles and or activities to police.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Grey County OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
