FireFit 2016 SundayAn estimated 120 firefighters from across Canada will be in Saugeen Shores this weekend to compete in the 2019 FireFit Championships.

Described as “the toughest two minutes in sports”, FireFit brings together would-be and experienced firefighters who face challenges which commonly happen in emergency situations. The 2019 event, co-hosted by Bruce Power and the Saugeen Shores Fire Department, takes place Saturday and Sunday (July 13-14) at the Port Elgin Main Beach. The competition hasn’t taken place in Saugeen Shores since 2016.

“We’re proud to work together with the Saugeen Shores Fire Department to bring a nationally recognized event to the community,” said Gary Smith, Section Manager, Emergency and Protective Services at Bruce Power. “Every year, the FireFit competition receives tremendous support by our employees, the Town of Saugeen Shores employees, the community and the approximately 70 volunteers who’ll be lending us a hand over the weekend.”

FireFit is made up of six tasks: the Stair Climb, Hose Hoist, Forcible Entry, Run, Hose Advance, and Victim Rescue. Firefighters will compete in the individual races Saturday, with the team event – made up of 3-5 firefighters – taking place Sunday.

Bruce Power and the Saugeen Shores Fire Department will both have teams in Sunday’s competition. There will also be a Junior Firefighters Challenge for boys and girls.

Admission to the event is free and the public is encouraged to come out and support the competitors.
