One-hundred post-secondary students from Bruce, Grey and Huron counties received their $500 Bruce Power scholarships this morning.

BP Scholarships2To celebrate its 10th anniversary in 2011, Bruce Power began offering scholarships to students from the surrounding area to help with the costs of pursuing a post-secondary education. With this being the ninth year of the program, a total investment of $450,000 in scholarships has been awarded to date. The company presented the students with their scholarships at a breakfast event held at the Bruce Power Visitors’ Centre.

“The calibre of young talent in Bruce, Grey and Huron counties is evident in the applications we received again this year,” said Mike Rencheck, President and CEO of Bruce Power, who personally presented the awards to the recipients today. “Every dollar counts when you’re pursuing post-secondary education. If we can provide even a small boost to a local student, it may help them excel at their studies.

BP Scholarships1“We wish all of these students much success in their educational endeavours, and hopefully, many of them return to their communities to pursue a career in their respective fields.”

The selection committee is comprised of numerous Bruce Power employees from a variety of departments and levels. The applications were reviewed with system-generated reference numbers to remove any name, location or other potential biases, and all personal information was removed to ensure anonymity. This year there were recipients from over 18 universities and 23 colleges.

Through a partnership with Indspire, Bruce Power has also awarded a total of $54,000 to 12 local Indigenous students this year.
