REACH Centre Grey Bruce is holding their 5th Annual Harvest Luncheon on Thursday, October 17th, 2019 between 11:30am and 1:30pm at the Georgian Shores United Church auditorium. An anticipated 400 people will partake in a fundraiser for the revitalization of the Grey Granite Club and future home of the REACH Centre program delivery.
“This is what community looks like”, stated Jennifer Miller, Executive Director. “The Harvest Lunch is a wonderful example of how our area embraces inclusivity and acceptance. Our ticket sales this year have broken all records. We have had countless hours served by volunteers in preparation for this big event for which we are very grateful. Perhaps most importantly, our amazing participants of the REACH program have done everything from grow the potatoes used in the soup in partnership with CAMH, to making the decorations for the event as part of our program to provide skill acquisition for independence for our youth and young adults with intellectual or developmental challenges” Miller continues.
For the past year, the REACH Centre has been building their Social Enterprise initiatives to provide participants with an applied learning opportunity to attain transferable skills for employment or community volunteering. REACH has also partnered with O’SHARE to work on food preparation skills which will be put into practice at the event.
“Everything we do at REACH focuses on facilitating participants to have quality of life and meaningful contribution to community”, explains Miller. “Our extraordinary young people have so many gifts to share. Our ability based approach works on building existing capacity and exploring opportunities to continue learning”.
The event is open to the public and tickets are $10.00 with the option to eat-in or take-out. The lunch consists of homemade potato bacon soup (vegetarian option available), dinner roll (gluten free option available), celery, carrots and homemade pickles, fresh apple crisp with vanilla ice cream, and coffee or tea.
The REACH Centre is a charitable organization and is currently housed at Georgian Shores United Church in Owen Sound. The organization was created in an attempt to fill a distinct gap in meaningful opportunities for young adults that faced developmental, physical and communication challenges. Their mission is to provide individualized engaging adult-based social and educational learning opportunities, which support participants achieving their full potential in a safe and inclusive environment. Programs are delivered Monday through Thursday from 9:00am to 4:00pm.
