sand bags
The Municipality of Meaford has sand and sandbags available for residents to prevent flooding of waterfront homes.

Following last week’s October 31st storm, many shoreline areas in the Municipality of Meaford experienced significant erosion, leaving homes and buildings closer to the water’s edge and potentially vulnerable to flooding. While they can’t prevent further erosion, sandbags can be used to build walls adjacent to homes to prevent approaching waters from entering the structure.

Sandbags and/or sand can be picked up at the Leaf and Yard Waste Depot at 157859 7th Line this weekend during leaf and yard waste hours, Friday from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. They will also be available next week from Tuesday to Friday during regular business hours, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Please bring your own shovels and transportation to fill and haul the sandbags. You will be required to sign in to allow distribution tracking. For further instructions on building a sandbag wall, please visit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oVQA-TPqtEQ.

Residents may also pick up empty sandbags and engage a local business to deliver sand to your property. Local sand providers include:

  • Chapple excavating
  • RF king excavating
  • Barfoot contracting
  • Jim Dier contracting

The Municipality’s Emergency Management Control group is currently monitoring the situation and working with Provincial and Federal authorities to help mitigate impacts.  To assist, we ask that all waterfront homeowners who have experienced property damage please complete our online form at https://forms.meaford.ca/Waterfront-Private-Property-Damage, call us at 519-538-1060, or stop by the office to provide your information. This will allow us to provide you directly with updates, and information on any resources or funding opportunities that become available.
