Long time Owen Sound City Councillor Peter Lemon has died after a long illness.

A councillor from 1985 until 2018, Lemon raised the profile of transit, accessibility, affordable housing, black history, and waterfront heritage at City Council, and fought passionately for these and other issues. He is being called a “community champion” and a “true son of Owen Sound”.

In his first term as a city councillor, Lemon presented a plan for what was to become the Owen Sound Municipal Non-Profit Housing Corporation in 1986. Just today, the federal and provincial governments announced $9.6 million in funding for Odawa Heights, the non-profit corporation's latest development, a mix of market rent and rent-geared-to-income units – a tribute to Lemon's legacy.

The Owen Sound Hub offers our condolences to those who loved Peter Lemon, with gratitude for his work on behalf of all Owen Sound residents.

Visitation will take place at the Brian E. Wood Funeral Home in Owen Sound on Monday, Feb. 3, from 6 to 9 p.m.

A funeral service will take place Tuesday, Feb. 4 at St. George’s Anglican Church at 11 a.m., followed by a lunch at the Royal Canadian Legion in Owen Sound.
