An open public meeting in Sauble Beach Friday evening, June 26, at 7 p.m. will be literally open, taking place in the Beachside Take-out parking lot. The meeting was organized by Tom LaForme and local business owners in response to recent decisions made by the Town Council of South Bruce Peninsula regarding an indefinite closure of Sauble Beach.

According to organizers “We want to give space to the voices not being recognized in our meetings, our council and the media,” and they believe the situation “needs attention in the country at large.” They are calling for an immediate change in municipal policy.

Organizers are very clear about the ground rules for the meeting - “Bring a lawn chair if you wish. Social Distancing is mandatory. DO NOT attend if you are feeling any type of illness or COVID-19 symptoms. All are welcome to hear and/or express concerns, thoughts, beliefs, expressions and opinions. However, all are encouraged to be brief and respectful. No violence or threats will be tolerated.”

These same clear standards of safe conduct will be expected at a Saturday “Sauble Beach Towel Day of Resistance!”  event at the beach, being described as an “orderly act of solidarity”.

“Please only come in a maximum of 10 people in your social bubble. All groups must be separated by 6 feet. Social distancing must be respected and abided by. If you feel you are unable to properly social distance for any reason, then please wear a mask.”

Organizers are assigning spots at the beach, which is closed on the orders of the Town.

“Make sure you have your towel and/or lawn chair. Umbrellas are welcome if they fit in your designated space." There is no mention of how long the event will last, but participants are encouraged to bring “water, sunscreen, and anything you require for your health and safety for the duration”.

Gatherings of more than ten people are still not permitted under the Provincial Order.
