Glassworks Cooperative is a local organization committed to creating Owen Sound’s first cooperative, co-designed community aimed to increase sustainable and attainably-priced housing options with a design focus on multi-generational living, aging in place, shared amenities and community green spaces, and building sustainably with a low-carbon footprint.
Cooperatives use democratic processes to ensure that benefits run deeper than financial profit and with this in mind, Glassworks will be hosting the first official charette of our co-design process this coming Wednesday, July 8th, 7-9pm over ZOOM.
All are welcome to participate - curious potential future residents, Glassworks members, potential partners, and folks interested in building community and growing sustainable and attainably-priced housing options in Owen Sound.
The event will be facilitated by planner, Kelsey Carriere and several architectural and design professionals, with opportunities for attendees to break out into small groups to discuss what building and design considerations need to be kept front of mind to address such issues as:
- Aging in place with built-in community
- Designing for great common spaces like community kitchens and shared workspaces
- Building in community gardens, car share and other shared amenities and services
- Incorporating resilient systems like passive solar, renewable energy production and grey water recycling
We welcome all who are interested in the idea of co-operative housing, who perhaps see themselves as a future resident, who have a design affinity, or simply would love to see this project come to fruition in Owen Sound.
To attend, please register on the blog page of www.Glassworks.Coop for Co-Design the Future @ Glassworks.
“We believe that sustainability and affordability in housing need not be mutually exclusive and that through cooperative ownership, can be the way of the future," says Kelsey Carriere, MscPl, MES and Glassworks board member.
