Below is a 'News Release' that appears on the website of Canada Unity, an entity claiming to be the organizational body behind what it calls, 'the Freedom Convoy Movement,' also known as the Truckers Convoy still occuping an area of downtown Ottawa in the vicinity of the Canadian Parliament Building. The release appears to have gotten little or no news media coverage so far, for some reason, assuming it's been sent out.

The release appears to admit the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) previously circulated for public support was a mistake. That's a step in the right direction, and not entirely surprising because the MOU was woefully ill-informed about how Canada's system of Parliamentary government works. The MOU in effect called for the overthrow of the elected government by the unelected Governor-General of Canada, and the unelected Senate. It also called for the Governor-General, the Senate, and supporters of the convoy protest to set up a special, unelected committee to chart the future course of government in Canada, supposedly under the Canadian Constitution and Charter of Rights. That was a foolishly undemocratic, even dictatorial idea, as Canada Unity now appears to realize.

For one basic thing, Canada is a Consitutional Monarchy, with the Governor-General representing the current monarch, Queen Elizabeth II. The Queen, and, therefore, the Governor-General of Canada, act strictly on the basis of advice given to them by the Prime Minister of Canada. The Monarch is not a President, especially one with the executive power of the U.S. President, far from it.

I note only two names appear under the News Release below, with no indication even those two names were actually signed. Others, known to be organizers of the Truckers' movement, including Tamara Lich, are not named. So, it remains uncertain how much support the withdrawal of the MOU has among the protest organizers, and whether it has truly taken effect. Again, that's on the assumption it was actually sent out.

NEWS RELEASE

Notice of Formal Withdrawal of MOU by Canada Unity
Ottawa February 8 2022 – For Immediate Release

It has come to the attention of Canada Unity that the Memorandum Of Understanding (herein referred to as MOU) does not reflect the spirit and intent of the Freedom Convoy Movement 2022

We represent the voice of many Canadians who desire to have the Charter of Rights and Freedoms upheld. We are everyday Canadians, not lawyers or politicians.

We are immediately withdrawing the MOU as we do not want any unintended interpretations to continue. Our sole desire with the MOU was to have a document where Canadians could peacefully express their displeasure with current C19 mandates, and express their desire to be free. Canada Unity does not support or encourage any acts which tarnish democratic values held by Canadians.

To the over 320,000 original signatories of the MOU; we appreciate your support and will continue to peacefully demonstrate until the Charter of Rights and Freedoms is upheld.

This document was created with the sole purpose of bringing the government of Canada and all Canadian citizens into agreement; that the Charter of Rights and Freedoms should be upheld for all.

Canada Unity firmly supports the constitution and democratic process. We remain committed to following lawful process and upholding freedom of choice.
