firedanger

– by David McLeish

I grew up in northern Canada. Back then things called fire breaks were used to protect communities from wildfires.

A road or a ring of cleared vegetation was used to reduce the spread of wildfire. My father talked about one in northern Saskatchawan that was a golf course.

Today in Ontario, development of rural lands is being encouraged without any heed to the natural environment that has been invaded.

Perhaps developers should be required to set aside land for firebreaks.
