Mike Schreiner, Green Party of Ontario leader and MPP for Guelph, made the following statement regarding Doug Ford office's remarks on asylum seekers:
"Doug Ford office's remarks on those seeking asylum in Ontario are harmful.
Tying together the lack of affordable housing options for people in Ontario with the lack of first landing spaces for refugees fleeing desperate situations is an apples to oranges comparison, and one that promotes division and scapegoating.
We need political leadership that brings people together to build inclusive, caring communities. Opening our hands and hearts to people in need is an important Canadian value.
A measured and collaborative approach between all three levels of government is the best way forward.
Ontario is a stronger province because of our diversity, and we should strive to treat everyone with respect and compassion.
We can and should do more to ensure those fleeing conflict, persecution and climate change are accepted with care and compassion.
Today's announcement combined with the Premier's decision to delay reforms to improve police oversight sends a troubling signal to racialized communities that making Ontario an inclusive place is not a priority for the new government."
