Independent researchers at Laval University in Montreal have been assessing how governments fulfil their promises since 1984.
They’ve recently determined that 92 percent of promises made by Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau in the 2015 election campaign have been fulfilled in full or part.
Commitments such as the Canada Child Benefit, enhanced Old Age Security and a better Canada Pension Plan. And while we’re speaking of fulfilling promises, we restored the retirement age back to 65 from age 67 -- a change the Harper Conservatives sprung on Canadians without bothering to ask voters in the 2011 election.
Our 92 percent progress rate for campaign commitments is the highest percentage of any federal government in the last 35 years, a period that covers prime ministers Harper, Martin, Chretien and Mulroney.
Prime Minister Trudeau welcomes this independent scrutiny. In fact, our Liberal government was the first to publicly disclose the mandate letters of cabinet ministers, and then set up a mandate tracker to publicly track how we were doing, updated regularly.
Four years ago we proposed a positive and far-reaching platform. Once in government, we delivered, and if we were unable to fulfil a commitment, or circumstances required a change in that commitment, we publicly acknowledged as much.
Canadians again have a choice on October 21. As Liberals, we intend to continue setting a high bar, and challenging ourselves to clear it. Positive change is always a work in progress. Let’s choose to continue to move forward.
