On Sunday September 25th just before 12:00 p.m. the Owen Sound Police Service received a call about a man assaulting the caller and then fleeing in a Ford pick up truck. The caller also indicated that the driver was impaired by alcohol.

Police located the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop in order to investigate the allegations. The driver however failed to stop for police and continued to drive eastbound

along 10th Street East. A second traffic stop was initiated by police in the 1700 block of 10th Street East, at which time the driver stopped the truck without incident. The police investigation determined that the 44-year-old male driver was under the influence of alcohol and as a result, was taken into custody.

Once at the Owen Sound Police Service the Scarborough resident provided samples of his breath to a police breathalyzer technician. One of the tests revealed that the driver had three times the legal limit of alcohol in his blood. As a result, the vehicle was impounded for 7 days and his driver’s licence suspended for 90 days.

The man is to appear in court in October in order to answer to the charges of Assault, Flight from Peace Officer, Operation While Impaired, and Operation While Impaired - Over 80 mgs.

Investigating officer PC Robilliard stated “Based on the location and the time of day we are very fortunate that there wasn’t a collision”. The recently hired Owen Sound PoliceOfficer went on to say “Impaired driving still remains a serious concern for police and according to Statistics Canada, impaired driving killed as many as 155 people in Canada in 2019”.
