QE2 PlatinumJubileePin CanadaDuring a short ceremony today at the Owen Sound Police Station Special Constable Cory Fernando was recognized by Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound Member of Parliament Alex Ruff with the presentation of a Queen’s Jubilee Commemorative Coin and certificate.

Special Constable Fernando was recognized for her selfless act of donating a portion of her liver in February of this year to a co-worker, Special Constable Jason Helm, who suffers from cystic fibrosis and was experiencing life threatening liver failure as a result of his disease.

Both Fernando and Helm have recovered well from the surgery and both have returned to work and their regular lives.

Special Constable Fernando was nominated for the award by Owen Sound City Council, many of whom were in attendance for the ceremony along with Cory’s family, Special Constable Helm, and representatives of the Owen Sound Police Association.

Chief Craig Ambrose said “I continue to be extremely proud of Cory and the incredible gift of life she provided for Jason through her donation. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Mayor Boddy and the members of Owen Sound City Council for keeping Cory in their thoughts through their nomination, and a particular thank you to MP Alex Ruff for taking the time out of his busy schedule to coordinate and present this award.”
