Impaired driver arrested after colliding with a Hanover Police Service cruiser.

On June 23rd 2018 at 6:20 p.m. members of the Hanover Police Service were called to the McDonald's Restaurant parking lot for reports of a motor vehicle collision involving a suspected impaired driver. The driver had fled the scene prior to police arrival.

A short time later, a Hanover Police Service officer located the motor vehicle with front-end damage west bound on County Road #4 at the intersection of County Road #3 in West Grey, after being flagged down by witnesses. The driver was travelling at low speed, when the Hanover officer attempted to block its forward movement. The driver of the motor vehicle continued west bound and struck the patrol cruiser with head-on impact causing minor damages.

The female driver, identified as a 40-year-old Durham resident was taken into custody and charged with impaired driving and refusing to provide a breathalyzer test. She was later released from custody after she sobered and is scheduled to appear on July 11th 2018 in Walkerton Court to answer to the charges.

The investigation is active and police anticipate further charges of failing to remain at the scene of at least two confirmed motor vehicle collisions in Hanover.

The West Grey Police Service were called to assist and investigated the head-on collision. They are also actively investigating similar fail to remain reports in their policing jurisdiction.

The Hanover Police Service officer involved in the collision attended to the Hanover and District Hospital with minor injuries was treated and released. The 40-year-old female driver was uninjured from the collision.

The Hanover Police Service wants to thank the witnesses who have assisted with this investigation and encourage anyone who has not spoken with police, who witnessed the actions of the impaired driver to come forward. This incident is a great example of the police and community working together to keep our roadways safer knowing that a tragedy, in this case, was likely avoided.
