Pedestrian struck by vehicle on 16th Street East.
A 76 year old Shallow lake man was charged under the Highway Traffic Act by Owen Sound Police this afternoon after a collision on 16th Street East involving a car and a pedestrian. Just after 3:00 p.m. police received a report of a male being struck by a car in the 1300 block of 16th Street East. Police arrived on the scene to find a male pinned under his mobility scooter in a crosswalk. EMS and Owen Sound Fire Service attended to assist.
The investigation revealed that the male had been travelling east bound on 16th Street East crossing the entrance to the mall with the right of way. A vehicle exiting the mall struck the male within the crosswalk causing the scooter to topple. The pedestrian extracted from the scooter and transported to Owen Sound hospital for non life threatening injuries. The driver of the car was charged with failing to yield to a pedestrian.
Drivers are reminded to pay close attention for mobility scooters using the sidewalk since they are particularly vulnerable due to the low height. Police would also like to recognize the assistance offered by several citizens who were in the area at the time.
