On December 1, 2018 Bruce Peninsula Ontario Provincial Police hosted an emergency services fundraiser at Wiarton Keppel International Airport at Grey Road 1, Georgian Bluffs. The event named "Pull-a-Plane Challenge for United Way" was held under an overcast sky with cooler temperatures but the pavement was dry and the chilli, hot chocolate and coffee were hot. A total of $2,000 was raised for Bruce/Grey United Way.
Four teams were involved in the challenge, Northern Bruce Peninsula Fire Department, South Bruce Peninsula Fire Department, Bruce County Paramedics and Ontario Provincial Police (Grey County and Bruce Peninsula detachments).
The event started with warm-up pulls to get the teams ready for the main event. Participants prepped their muscles with an OPP cruiser and a Bruce County Ambulance. The main event was a twin engine airplane. The competition was close but team OPP came out on top in the end with the fasted pull time for the 50 meter distance. The fasted team, for combined times in all three disciplines, went to Northern Bruce Peninsula Fire Department. The event was concluded with a pull by all teams including 2 fire engines, with a total weight of over 30,000 kgs!
A good day was had by all, participants and supporters.
A special thanks to Penn Automotive of Hepworth for assisting with set-up for the pulls.
It is anticipated that we will hold the challenge again next year, BIGGER and BETTER.
