Arrest made during a stolen property investigation involving a Kijiji advertisement.
On February 7, 2019 members of the Criminal Investigations Branch of the Owen Sound Police Service concluded an investigation with the arrest of a 35 year old Owen Sound resident.
The investigation determined that the accused had stolen a watch from a city business and subsequently posted it for sale on Kijiji. Officers were able to identify the accused through video surveillance as well as by investigating the online activity of the accused.
Police then engaged the accused by using information from the online advertisement, conducted surveillance and subsequently arrested him for theft and possession of property obtained by crime. Police recovered the stolen watch from the possession of the accused as well as a small quantity of Crystal Methamphetamine.
At the time of the incident, the accused was on a Recognizance of Bail pertaining to previous criminal charges that are still before the courts. The accused is also bound by a Probation Order resulting from previous convictions for similar offences.
The accused was held in custody for a bail hearing.
The Owen Sound Police Service would like to remind everyone to be cautious when completing online transactions. Citizens are further reminded of the availability of the ‘Safe Exchange Zone’. The ‘Safe Exchange Zone’ is a designated area located at the Owen Sound Police Service that is equipped with video surveillance for increased security while completing transactions.
