trafficThe Ontario Provincial Police is reminding drivers that the Distracted Driving Campaign runs from March 11 -17, 2019. As of January 1, 2019 the penalties for distracted driving increased.

The new penalties for distracted driving include a fine increase up to $1,000, three demerit points and a three-day licence suspension. The penalties increase with subsequent offences. For novice drivers in the graduated licencing system, there is no fine or additional demerit points but longer licence suspensions now apply.

When you're distracted, who's driving?

If you look at your phone for just five seconds when you're behind the wheel, it's like driving the more than 100 yards/300 feet with your eyes closed. This would be equivalent to driving the entire length of a football field with your eyes closed. So much could happen during these five seconds.

How to avoid becoming a distracted driving statistic? Put your phone away and pay attention!

Remember: Distracted driving can be any task that takes the driver away from the primary task of driving, such as texting, talking on a cell phone, eating, tuning the radio, or putting on makeup or shaving.

Safety must be the top priority when operating a motor vehicle.
