Another driver being charged with impaired shows a disturbing increase
On September 16, 2019 at 7:32 a.m. Grey Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were dispatched to a single motor vehicle collision involving a (white) pick-up truck in the ditch at Grey Road 170 near Side Road 15, Georgian Bluffs.
The driver was arrested at the scene and transported to Grey Bruce OPP detachment in Wiarton. The results of the breath samples provided by the driver were over 3 times the legal limit of 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood.
A 41 year old Georgian Bluffs resident has been charged with Operation while impaired by alcohol, section 320.14(1)(a) Criminal Code of Canada (CC) and Operation while impaired with blood alcohol concentration (80 plus), section 320.14(1)(b) CC.
In April of this year, Grey Bruce OPP reported a concerning and troubling 50 percent increase of drivers charged with impaired driving throughout the detachment area, from the previous year.
From January 1, 2019 to September 19, 2019 Grey Bruce OPP officers have charged 114 drivers with impaired driving. In 2018, for the same time period, 63 drivers were charged with the same offence. That is a disturbing 81 percent increase.
"This dangerous and destructive behavior by some drivers is truly disturbing. The privilege of holding a driver's licence in Ontario, can and will, be removed from anyone who drives a motor vehicle while impaired. Grey Bruce OPP are committed to public safety on our highways. Through proactive traffic stops, RIDE programs and traffic complaints from the public we will continue to pursue safe roads for our communities." ~ Inspector Martin Murray, Grey Bruce OPP Detachment.
