On November 14th, 2019, at approximatley 2:25 a.m., a flat bed tow truck was driving westbound just inside the city limits on 16th Street East when it struck a large animal crossing the roadway. The area was dark with no artificial street lighting, causing reduced visibilty. The driver stopped the truck and found that the animal involved in the collision was an approximatley 250 pound black bear.
Unfortunately the bear succumed to its injuries as a result of the collision. Due to the large size of the animal, the Owen Sound Police Service contacted members of the city Works Department who attended and removed it using a mid sized front end loader. The driver of the flat bed truck was not injured.
Police are reminding drivers to be vigilant when driving on the roadways at night and to be cautious of wildlife even inside city limits.
