Just before 11:00 p.m. members of the Owen Sound Police Service attended an apartment building at the request of the Owen Sound Fire Service, as there was a fire in a third-floor apartment. The fire was caused by a candle that was knocked over in the bathroom, which lit a towel on fire and then quickly spread to the contents of the bathroom. The occupants of the apartment attempted to put out the flames but were unsuccessful.
Tenants of the building assisted one another in evacuation, until emergency services personnel arrived. Owen Sound Fire Fighters were able to extinguish the fire and contain the damage to the bathroom and two bedrooms of the unit. Fire Fighters were able to rescue two of the three cats but unfortunately the third was found deceased.
Paramedics were on scene and medically cleared the three occupants of the apartment. Victim Services attended to assist the mother and her two young children and a family member arrived to provide transportation and shelter.
It is estimated that the fire caused several thousands of dollars in damages to the apartment.
