The South Bruce Ontario Provincial Police has noticed young cyclists riding without a helmet. On October 1, 1995, bike helmets became mandatory for riders under the age of 18.

Safe Kids Canada advises that a properly fit bike helmet reduces the risk of a serious injury by as much as 85%.

The Bike Helmet Research Foundation has observed a significant reduction in the number of child cyclists admitted to hospital with a head injury since bike helmets became mandatory for young riders.

Bicycles are considered vehicles in the Highway Traffic Act (HTA) of Ontario which means they are subject to the rules of the road.

The fine for riding without a helmet under the age of 18 years is $75.00. Cyclists over the age of 18 years of age are encouraged to wear a bicycle helmet for their safety, but this is not required by law.
