Like many of us, Ron Pirie first came to Owen Sound because he had a friend here. The developer of "The Sydenham" condominium project had visited local lawyer Doug Grace regularly over the years, and came to feel at home in our city. After building an international market research firm in the GTA, Pirie was ready to leave a physical legacy. The property for sale on the east side of the 9th Avenue bridge presented him with an opportunity to create "something significant in a landmark location in a great community".
"Owen Sound has been recognized as a top retirement community", Pirie said in an interview in his 8th Street sales office, "and I felt that the people who lived in its beautiful old homes would want to downsize into something of unique quality and style."
The city council and former Mayor Deb Haswell were supportive from the start –

MP Larry Miller spoke with The Hub on November 5 at the end of a long day in Ottawa, and on his way to the airport to attend the ground-breaking for the Marine Training facility at Georgian College.
The Conservative caucus had gathered along with those who were not re-elected to hear Stephen Harper's farewell as leader and to meet their thirty-some new colleagues. This was followed by a vote by MPs and senators to choose the party's interim leader -Rona Ambrose.
Miller says the party is in good hands. He and Ambrose were first elected together in 2004, and since then she has held eight posts in cabinet and its committees. Miller calls her "experienced and capable" and says she will bring the right persona to the job. "Rightly or wrongly, we were perceived to be confrontational", Miller said, but Ambrose will address that with the right balance. She has said she will be reaching out to get everyone's input, and Miller is looking forward to her call. "I have never been afraid to say what's on my mind."
When it comes to choosing a permanent new leader for the party, Miller says...

Dear Editor,
During an election campaign, it is quite easy for candidates and leaders to get caught up in the 'buzz' of the election and make promises that are politically motivated but are not practically responsible from an operational standpoint. This is exactly what the Liberal Party and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau have done in regards to Canada's involvement in aiding Syrian refugees.
The Honourable John McCallum, Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship has announced that the Liberal Party remains committed to their lofty campaign commitment of relocating 25,000 Syrian refugees by the end of the year. During the announcement the Minister stated that the government will be taking a "whatever works" stance on the issue to bring 25,000 refugees to Canada in roughly 7 weeks. Since the government made this announcement a number of experts have claimed that this goal is impossible and if the government decides to proceed on a rushed basis this plan could jeopardize the responsible intake of refugees.
This is entirely a politically motivated policy based on an irresponsible campaign announcement. I am disappointed
