With Oscar buzz and award season in full swing, join other film buffs for a whole weekend of films at the annual Owen Sound's Reel Festival. This weekend the Tom Thomson Art Gallery, in conjunction with the Toronto International Film Festival Film Circuit, presents the 14th Annual Reel Festival. Our programme is exciting and engaging, featuring selections of independent film from Canada and around the world – with something for everyone.
We've got Canadian political satire at its best with director Philippe Falardeau's My Internship in Canada, a witty take on the wheeling and dealing that can only take place in our nation's capital. Political commentary and black humour combine in the dark comedy The Legend of Barney Thomson, directed by, and starring Robert Carlyle, with a great comedic turn by Emma Thompson.
The story of an eccentric patron of the arts draws the portrait of one of most significant players in the modernart movement in Peggy Guggenheim: Art Addict. The coming-of- age tale is a genre unto itself, and winner of this past Toronto International Film Festival's Best Canadian First Feature, Sleeping Giant, does the form justice in this 'whip-smart' study of emotional adolescence.
Two stories about mothers and their children feature prominently in this weekend's line-up. In The Second Mother, an international favourite from Brazil, the complexities of class and generational barriers play out during the reunion of a live-in-nanny and her estranged daughter. In Room, a film receiving many accolades this season, the relationship between a mother and her son is distilled to its purest form in a harrowing story of survival.
And the most pervasive story of all, the love story, gets a unique and beautifully rendered treatment in the multi-award-winning Carol, recounting taboo love in the 1950s, and starring the ever ethereal Cate Blanchett.
The Tom Thomson Art Gallery has been presenting alternative film to area movie-goerssince 1996 with its Gallery Night at the Movies series. The Reel Festival, an off-shoot of that successful monthly programme, has provided local cinephiles with a winter weekend reprieve since 2003.
The Reel Festival runs Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the historic Roxy Theatre in downtown Owen Sound, February 26-28, 2016.
