On Saturday, May 2, the Owen Sound & North Grey Union Public Library is taking our annual Owen Sound Mini Con event online! While the Library remains closed due to COVID-19, library staff and community creators have worked to put together a full-day program that includes workshops, competitive fandom trivia, demonstrations, story time and a cosplay showcase.
The Library will start the day with a virtual story time with staff member Samantha, who will share a superhero story and some fun songs and activities with children. Tune in on Facebook starting at 10:30 am. Facebook events through the day will include demonstrations of library staff members Laura drawing the OSMiCon mascots and Sharon with how tos on sewing your very own stuffie mewnicorn from a sock and upcyling old furniture and other items with comic books.
Three great workshops hosted via Zoom will include Dungeons & Dragons 101 with Jenn Barclay from the Scenic City Game Emporium, World Building for Fantasy Writers with local author Cathy Hird, and Creating Characters for Animation and Games with Scott Caple, a local animation professional who has worked with companies including LucasFilm, Disney and Pixar.
The Library will wrap up the day with a live fandom trivia event hosted by local trivia master Ross Docherty. Bring your best fandom knowledge to play and win prizes.
One aspect of the live event that will be greatly missed is the cosplay showcase. The Library is asking community members to share photos of themselves in cosplay to be part of an online cosplay showcase that will be posted to Facebook and Instagram.
