Rumour spreads faster on Facebook than the Delta variant at a birthday party.
From our own page and group, we try to remove what we cannot substantiate, along with the personal insults that inevitably follow. And if possible, we try to get you the facts.
So here is what we could learn, from the people who know, about the orange-tarped building on the south-east corner of the Gitche Namewikwedong (10th Street) Bridge.
The structure consisted of two buildings/properties that shared a common wall. The City was able to come to an agreement with the owner of the building that fronted 10th Street East, Louis Gavaris, to purchase the building and subsequently demolish it. The City was unable to come to an agreement with the owner of the building to the south of the one purchased that is owned by Steve Gavaris.
The remaining building experienced some settlement during construction activities for the 10th Street Bridge replacement. As it could not be confirmed with any certainty what caused the settlement, it became an insurance issue between the owner and his insurer. What course of action they take still remains to be determined.
The original plan was to insulate the newly exposed wall, which was done, and then install siding to protect the insulation. Placing the tarps over the insulation was a temporary measure. Once the settlement of the remaining building was noticed, the siding of the wall was put on hold until such time as the owner determines the future of their building.
If we learn anything further, or need to correct or update anything if we hear back from Mr. Gavaris, we'll let you know. In the meantime, "orange you glad" you got the facts on the Hub?
