01 SkatePark SpalledSurface

- by Hub staff

skatebiardearthday2Fencing went up this weekend across half of the Kiwanis Skate and Bike Park in Owen Sound's Victoria Park.

Although there has been no official explanation yet, the concrete surface of the ten year old park has been in need of repair for some time.

The popular park attracts skateboarders, BMX bike and scooter riders of all ages. It was built with the help of a $100,000 contribution from the Kiwanis Club of Owen Sound paid over several years after its official opening in 2014. It was built on the ice pad base of the former Coliseum.

Replacing the old skateboard park on the harbour by the Family Health building, the new location was chosen in part because it would be well patrolled, being so close to the Juilie McArthur Rec Centre.

The park has been the site of five SkateJams hosted by the Owen Sound Police with special events, prizes and a free barbecue for over 100 participants. Covid interrupted the annual event.

Like all city assets, the maintenance, repair and eventual replacement of recreational facilities is included in annual capital and operating budgets.
