The Owen Sound leaf and yard waste compost site reopened its gates for the season to Owen Sound residents on April 10.
Those using the site are asked to please take the time to read the allowed and prohibited materials list below, as the City will be placing a greater emphasis on compliance.
The site will initially be opened from 8:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., seven days a week, providing a convenient option for Owen Sound residents to dispose of their leaf and yard waste materials.
The facility is located at 2450 28th Ave. E., the southwest corner of the intersection of 28th Avenue East and 26th Street East, north of 20th Street East.
Please note that the leaf and yard waste site is exclusively for the residents of Owen Sound, and proof of residency may be required.
Commercial businesses that regularly use the compost site to drop material from City residents ONLY can register through the City’s website to be permitted.
Specific guidelines are in place to outline what may or may not be dropped at the compost site.
Allowed Materials:
- Grass clippings
- Leaves
- Garden waste
- Branches and shrubs up to 15 centimetres (6 inches) in diameter
Prohibited Materials:
- Plastic bags
- Garbage
- Kitchen waste
- Pet waste
- Treated wood
- Trees and branches over 15 centimetres (6 inches) in diameter
The compost site will be monitored, and users are expected to have their driver's license or other proof of residency, such as a tax bill or utility bill, on hand.
The site's hours are currently under review, and visitors are advised to check the website or call public works at 519.376.4274 before visiting the site to ensure it is open.
Screened compost will be available later in the spring and mulch in the summer. Details will be available here.
