As part of a much larger project to fix the road and reconstruct the 2nd Avenue entrance to Harrison Park, the trail paving piece was recommended by the City's Accessibility Advisory Committee. Council accepted that recommendation at their March 19, 2018 meeting.
From the staff report:
"During a review of this project with the Accessibility Advisory Committee at their meeting held 26 February 2018, it was suggested that improvements to the nearby Freedom Trail could be made if the budget allowed. These improvements would include drainage works, base replacement and asphalt paving the trail surface to a width of 3 metres to increase accessibility. These improvements would be undertaken from a new concrete sidewalk at the Park entrance to the Rainbow Bridge and from the Rainbow Bridge to the Black History Cairn and southerly to the existing paved trail near the south side of the Park Island, at an estimated cost of $100,000."
